What do you know about CBD?
CBD is another name for Cannabidiol, and it is one of the compounds that is used for its therapeutic values to treat a certain number of diseases. This is gradually coming into the limelight as more and more scientists, and doctors are conducting research on the therapeutic effects of CBD on the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease.
Many countries of the world have legalized the usage of CBD. However, many of the others are yet to do so. It is a naturally occurring compound in a flower of cannabis, which has a history that dates back to centuries.
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer’s is a common and very well known form of dementia. Dementia is a scientific term for memory loss, which hampers the daily lives of people. This is not a normal part of the life of many people and can hinder the general growth of any human being. The most significant risk factor of this disease is aging, which is occurring most commonly in people at the age of 65 and above.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys an individual’s memory (initially short-term memory) and thinking skills, and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. The older they get, the more they are prone to the risk of forgetting things.

How can CBD help in Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease, in which short-term memory is mainly impaired. Research shows that there is an increase in the number of people with Alzheimer’s diseases, worldwide. It is characterized by inflammation of neurons as well as an increase in oxidative stress. Current AD treatments do not stop or reverse the progression of this disease. Therefore, the is a compelling need for new, more effective therapeutic agents. Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid, has demonstrated neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in vitro. Therefore, it is considered as a potential multifunctional treatment option for Alzheimer’s disease.
Here, we will report some of the potential therapeutic effects of CBD oil on AD based on the findings of recent evidence. CBD has been shown to exhibit neuroprotective properties in an in vitro study, where it prevented cortical neurodegeneration (degeneration of the outermost part of the brain). In other studies, CBD has been reported to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Furthermore, CBD was shown effective in protecting against neurotoxicity, which is induced by a complex pathway during the progression of AD. All of these properties suggest that BD is perfectly placed to treat the majority of pathologies typically found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. However, more studies and clinical trials on human data must be conducted first in order to apply these therapeutic effects on patients with AD.
Recommendations by physicians
Different labs and doctors now recommend the intake of Cannabidiol to prevent the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It helps in keeping the disease progression in check. Currently, researchers and scientists are exploring ways to delay or prevent the disease progression as well as treat its associated symptoms. Researchers are conducting various studies and clinical trials on CBD to target the pathogenic processes of Alzheimer’s disease.
One should keep in mind that the promising effects of CBD in treating Alzheimer’s are still under investigation and should not be used in humans until clinical trials are done and proved its therapeutic potential as an efficient treatment option for Alzheimer’s disease.
